Dr. Fangzheng Lyu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at Virginia Tech and Director of the GeoCompute Lab. He received his Ph.D. in Geography (2024), an M.S. in Geography (2021) from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a B.E. in Computer Engineering (2018) from the University of Hong Kong.
His research focuses on GIScience, scalable geospatial computing, GeoAI, and urban informatics, with an emphasis on developing computational and AI methods that transform large and complex spatial datasets into actionable knowledge for addressing environmental, societal, and infrastructure challenges. He has published peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and conference papers in leading GIScience and computer science outlets, including the IJGIS, CEUS and TGIS. His research is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and supported through NSF ACCESS and NSF I-GUIDE. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Annals of the American Association of Geographers, as Chair of the Cyberinfrastructure Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers, and as a member of the Research and Membership Committees of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science.
